vancouver special

And you thought a ‘Vancouver Special’ was a ranch-style house in the Republic of East Vancouver…

For Vancouverites and Calgarians, one of the special things about Oaxaca is the REGULAR, RELIABLE AND DIRECT flights with WestJet from YVR and YYC direct (although sometimes adding in an annoying extra stop at YYC or YVR – speak with us about how to avoid this) to Huatulco HUX International Airport, close to some of Oaxaca’s finest Pacific beaches.

What this means is you can build a fabulous holiday that includes beach time, a trip up through the Sierra Sur and down to Oaxaca de Juárez, and a relaxing stay at Oaxaca’s one-and-only Bike Hostal in Tlalixtac de Cabrera. With fascinating day trips to places like El Tule (home of the world’s largest tree), Huayápam (with world-class restaurants with incredible views across the Valle de Tlacolula) or Teotitlán del Vale (with a marvellous craft market featuring artisanal textiles and “barro”, ceramics made from locally sourced clay).

Time for some tropical sun!

Option #1 - WestJet direct to Huatulco HUX (Vamos a la Playa)

The best time to visit the beach is, conveniently enough, exactly when it's getting a bit nippy in British Columbia. From November to February the weather is unbelieveably perfect, with warm sunny days, cooler night and virtually no chance of rain, although the rest of the year the daytime temperature are probably a little high for most visitors from the north.

Travel in style

Huatulco - Car Hire with Europcar

This is the easy way to go, and opens up lots of options for spectacular, little-known beaches, magical destinations while crossing the Sierra Sur mountains, and for day trips around Tlalixtac and Oaxaca de Juárez.

Europcar is my favorite, and is located just acros the street from the entrance to Huatulco Airport. Just one word of warning: quoted prices typically don't include insurance which while not legally necessary, is a requirement of the hire company. As a rule of thumb, this will cost approximately the same as the car hire itself (p.s. don't count on credit card insurance, the company will require you to buy in-country insurance regardless).

Mountain Adventure

Huatulco - Crossing the Mountains by Public Transport

Two options: one by super-luxury coach, taking the brand new super-carretera, the other less luxurious but perhaps more interesting, a comfortable minibus winding through remote villages in the Sierra Sur.

The Greatest City

Option #2 - Flight to Ciudad de México MEX (City Break)

Many major airline fly from Vancouver YVR to Ciudad de México MEX, including Air Canada and Aeroméxico. Key factors are price, timing and luggage - in my experience, Air Canada is pretty generous with check-in baggage 🙂

MEX to OAX
Ciudad de México – Connecting Flight to Oaxaca de Juárez OAX
México has a couple of ‘Ultra-Low-Cost-Carriers’ – Volaris and Viva. You can often pick up tickets MEX-OAX for as little as 1 peso, but you still have to pay the airport tax (known as ‘TUA’ or Tarifa del Uso del Aeropuerto). All told, you’re probably looking at around 1,000 pesos per person, which is currently around $70 cad.

Acommodación Rústica

Accommodation in Tlalixtac de Cabrera

'Acomodación Rústica', they'd say in Spanish - rustic accommodation. We're really in the countryside here - a long waterfront (if a frequently dry 'arroyo' counts as water) around a beautiful tropical garden. Draw your own water from the 'pozo' (there's also tap water), watch the stars at night from one of our roof terraces, enjoy our spacious yoga studio (traditional adobe walls), or jam-out with a selection of quality guitars!

Out and About

Day trips from Tlalix to Oaxaca de Juárez - and beyond!

Tlalixtac really is the centre of everywhere! Nearby towns include El Tule, featuring the largest (fattest trunk) tree in the world, El Punto, high in the pine forests at almost 3,000m, and of course our capital, Oaxaca de Juárez – a fascinating colonial city spread out below the ruins of the pre-Columbian Zapoteco capital of Monte Albán.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.
